
System-Wide Change
In mobilizing system-wide change, the key is to engage stakeholders directly in two areas: identifying what needs to be transformed and how the process will unfold. David Baum's concentrated, collaborative approach to this process engages the whole system in taking action to evolve the enterprise.

The "whole system in the room" method brings together up to 2,000 participants for meetings that last from one to three days. Using a designed, systematic approach, participants work in self-managed groups and sequentially identify what needs to change and how to do it.

This is not a conventional conference; there are usually no speeches, training exercises, or workshops. Instead, it is a hands-on alternative when an organization needs critical mass to drive results. Rather than relinquishing the vision to outside consultants, it gives crucial stakeholders the power to set goals and strategies.

System-wide change is ideal for envisioning organizational objectives, enabling employees for action, or in the formation of a coherent system-wide strategy.

Representative projects include:
- Shell Oil, where this model was used to implement a $260 million SAP conversion that far exceeded expectations.

- Inova Health Systems redesigned its delivery system to provide better quality while saving $70 million a year. A team of ten consultants from David Baum Associates worked for two years on this successful project.

- President Clinton's Summit for America's Future, which sought to provide two million additional children with health and mentoring programs.
